The Netherlands:
The Randstad and Around
The Dutch refer to the area encircled by the four cities of Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Utrecht as the Randstad (Round City); the megalopolis is also called "the West" by young, provincial Randstad wanna-bes who see it as the place to hit the big time. In addition to harboring the capital of international justice (The Hague) and the world's largest port (Rotterdam), the 10 small and medium-size cities in this small area are home to more than 40% of the country's residents--and that's not counting the tulip growers and vegetable and dairy farmers who fill in what little open land remains in the area.
