Poland:
Western Poland
Western Poland has always been the country's traditional heartland, despite spending much of the past half-millennium under German, Prussian, and Austro-Hungarian control. While most of western Poland today is heavily industrial and overpopulated, Poznan; (200 km west of Warsaw) and Torun; (130 km northwest of Warsaw) stand out as vibrant historic cities. The 1,000-year-old oaks at Rogalin and 2,500-year-old prehistoric city Biskupin near Poznan; provide plenty of extra-urban interest.
