Northern Spain
The northern regions of the Iberian Peninsula--the principality of Asturias, the small province of Cantabria, the collection of Basque provinces (called Euskadi in the Basque language), and Navarra and Aragón, with their gorgeous Pyrenean mountain scenery--don't fit the stereotypical conception of Spain as a hot, dry expanse of plains. In fact, most of this corner of Spain is lush and verdant from the frequent rains, and is anything but flat: The countryside is dominated by rolling green hills that climax in the stunning Pyrenees bordering France, and the Picos de Europa in Asturias and Cantabria.
