Southern Sweden
Once a major battleground in the territorial conflicts between Denmark and Sweden, much of Southern Sweden was actually Danish as recently as the 1600s. Listen closely and you'll hear a bit of Danish in the local accent (a fact northerners spend a lot of time teasing them about). And although it's less stereotypically Swedish than the northern regions, this is the home of Sweden's oldest towns and much of its richest history--and the countryside is mighty picturesque, to boot. Considering its proximity to the Continent, the south is the easiest place to visit in Sweden, and according to the locals, you'd do just fine spending your whole trip here and avoiding those Stockholm snobs up north.
