Central Turkey
A triangle 200 km on each side, with Konya in the south, Cappadocia to the east, and Turkey's dull capital, Ankara, in the north, forms the central Anatolian plateau. Ankara has one of the best museums in Turkey but little else of interest. You can usually avoid it if you're traveling by bus, although it's a transport hub for trains. Konya is worth a stop only to break up the journey between the Mediterranean and Göreme's fairy castles. Cappadocia, however, is great. Sixty million years ago, two volcanoes spewed ash over a large area that since has been eroded into weird, otherworldly shapes by wind and rain. You need at least three days to walk around the unique valleys, explore the abandoned underground cities, and look into churches and homes carved into rocklike sculptures.
