Mediterranean Coast
Stretching 1,025 km from the touristy resort town/ferry port of Marmaris in the west to the Syrian border in the east, the Mediterranean coastline has some of Turkey's best beaches, most of them (if you believe what you read) enjoyed by Cleopatra and Mark Antony while they carried on their torrid love affair. You won't find as many slick, sleazy resorts here as on the Aegean, and tourism has not yet developed to the point where every restaurant serves fish and chips. Still, this is by no means virgin territory, especially in the west. Fethiye and Kas are developed vacation towns, used primarily as bases from which to explore nearby beaches. Avoid Alanya, a singularly unappealing resort town overrun by German package tourists.
