Continuing on with the tour through Gif Girl's Closet of Web Design Resources, this week we'll look at the magazines that Gif Girl more than periodically peruses. Ever notice how everyone talked about the paperless office, but ever since the Internet hit our desktops, we've been buried under reams of paper than before? That's because there's still no substitute for an informative, well-designed print magazine. Web Design Magazine Resources The Net ONLINE: http://www.thenet-usa.com Per issue: US$2.99 Subscription offer: US$24.95 It's not really a design magazine, so there's not a lot of discussion about classical design issues like typography or layout. But The Net is much more tech savvy than traditional design magazines, so you'll find a lot more discussion of tools of the trade like software and hardware, as well as online resources and utilities. Ironically, they have probably the weakest online presence of the bunch (except maybe ID Magazine, which doesn't have one at all); Gif Girl still hasn't figured that one out. Publish Magazine ONLINE: http://www.publish.com Per issue: US$4.95 Subscription offer: US$24.95 Publish is one of the few magazines out there that has transitioned gracefully from being a print oriented magazine to being full of resources for the new media designer. Hey, that's you, if you are making a Web site! It has some of the best written reviews of graphics and design hardware and software that Gif Girl has found, and they just went through a re-design that has substantially improved the readability of their magazine. There's still a lot of stuff in Publish that is geared towards print designers, so don't expect it to be 100% Web oriented, but they do have a kick-butt Web site with great online tutorials, plus a nifty design and publishing related news section. Adobe Magazine ONLINE: http://www.adobemag.com Per issue: US$5 Subscription: Free to most Adobe Product Owners, otherwise US$20 Hurray for freebies! You can try to scam a free subscription of this fine magazine from Adobe's Web site, but it comes automatically when you register Adobe Software like Photoshop and Illustrator in your name. Many of their articles explain, oddly enough, how to use their products. But the site also features great profiles of some of today's leading designers with profiles on their work. Their Web site is a treasure chest of goodies, especially the Tips and Tricks area, which has tutorials on all aspects of graphics production. ID: International Design ONLINE: none. ugh. Per issue: US$8.50 Subscription offer: US$57.50 Ok, Gif Girl had to throw at least one fancy schmancy design magazine in here. This is her all time fav...one of the most beautifully designed magazines on the stands. And it covers the whole gamut of design from furniture to books to buildings to...Web sites! As their name implies, they have excellent international coverage, and even if you can't afford every copy, it is well worth picking up once in a while for inspiration. They have no Web presence, but Gif Girl's sure that if they ever do it will be fantabulous.
