Tripod Insider

Vol. 2, No. 10

July 12, 1996

Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. Read more about office stress after the editors tell you what's new on Tripod.

General News

Try as hard as you can, but with Web publishing, it's hard to get anything done ahead of time. At 5 AM this past Wednesday, Janet, Jeff, and I finally uploaded the newest Tripod design makeover. We are proud of the new design because we think it highlights some of the best things about Tripod: great content, interactive services and, most importantly, our members! Some highlights include:

As always, we can't wait to hear your comments on the new design...good and bad. I am slowly recovering from sleep deprivation, so if you don't hear from me immediately, I'm probably asleep at my computer. Cheers!

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY

Come by the Work and Money section to cash in on our wealth of features and services. This week, Ken Kurson's new personal finance column, THE BUCK STARTS HERE, gets off to a rollicking start with "Mutual Funds: Straight, No Chaser." Put in your own two cents worth with the weekly Survey, which takes a look at abusive e-mail. The Dilemma comes from a Tripod member who is also a budding 14-year-old magician and businessperson -- do you have any tricks up your sleeve that could help him start his own business? As if that isn't enough for one week, we also have the first installment of a two-part interview with the 23-year-old entrepreneur behind, Internet Fast Forward, the Web ad blocker.

POLITICS & COMMUNITY

Where do political leaders go once they get kicked out of their countries? Tripod investigates in "The Exile Files." This is not your standard read-it-straight-through column -- this is journalism produced especially for the web. On Saturday, you can check out our interview with Paul Beatty, critically acclaimed poet and author of the recently released novel, "The White Boy Shuffle." Plus, where do you go to experience community? Tell us in the Politics & Community weekly survey.

HOMELIFE

This week in the Living and Travel section, the Great American Roadtrip column begins, "he said/she said" style. You won't believe how different the view can be from two windows. Explorer Tim Cahill tells Tripod how he found Batman shirts in the Congo, and our survey debates subversive advertising. Tell the doctor a great cure for jet-lag and win a Tripod T-shirt, or ask the doctor your own question (anything you want, he's not shy). This week: "Good" hepatitis? Why the sun and certain medications don't mix; and rotator cuff tears. Finally, due to the overwhelming response to our "Postcards from the Educated" contest, the winners will now be announced on the site July 22 (I need a little more time to read all the great entries!).

Tripod Insider

The Tripod Insider took a break last week, but now it's business as usual and Tripod Team proved once again that we work best under pressure. Jeff, Janet, and Margaret, the main architects of the recent redesign, worked endless hours this past week and each had their own unique way of dealing with the stress. Jeff, our indestructible tech, became so hyper even his hair grew back faster. Think we're joking? Maybe you need to revisit this unretouched before picture from issue 2-6..... Janet "Where are the Tums?" Daly was a bit more frantic and would occasionally try to pat a jpeg of her dog Chuckles. Margaret was the coolest of the group -- then again, she had a husband to bring her pizza and coffee.

The volleyball team also played well under pressure and we finally won a couple of games. Anthony, Mike, Nate, and I battled a bigger team, the darkness, and one really loud heckler to win 2 games to 1. Each game was decided by only 2 points.

Proving his leadership and dedication, our CE-Bo did the unthinkable and got himself "Bo'ed" (see Insider Vol. 2. No. 3). In a vain attempt to catch FedEx, Bo tried to get 20 overnight packages to New York only to have his car break down going up the treacherous Petersburg pass. After having the car pushed back to town, Bo had the packages FedEx'ed the next morning the old fashioned way: he had someone else do it.
