Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. This week the tech boys are fishing for servers and Emma has a new type of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Read all about the office news after editors tell you what's new on Tripod.
Content And Services
WORK & MONEY
The Work & Money section is proud to welcome new columnist Catherine Hedgecock this week. Ms. Hedgecock, an award-winning reporter and aspiring novelist, will be covering the West Coast for Tripod. Her first column profiles a New Age book publisher who found success by flaunting convention. Elsewhere, the Survey is eliciting a lively debate concerning the viability of Apple Computer, and the Dilemma is helping a do-gooder find equipment grants for his charity work. Bonus W&M; tip of the week: Try the Tripod Market Report -- our very own Beancounter uses it to track his investments.
-- Randy Williams, Editor
POLITICS & COMMUNITY
This week in P&C;, read Part Two of Andre C. Willis's commentary on the Black Church burnings. The survey concerns the issue of illegal immigration (and be sure to take a look at the results of last week's spirited debate on same-sex marriage). Political Playbook analyzes the GOP's search for political victory on welfare reform, school prayer, and affirmative action. Finally, we interview Elizabeth Smith, who runs a community-supported farm here in Williamstown. With family farms in decline, she offers a strong vision for how we must rebuild our local community through agriculture.
-- Anthony Qaiyum, Editor
HOMELIFE
This week in the HOMELIFE section, Tripod presents Team Malaysia! Tripod is an official supporter of the Malaysian Olympic Team -- this week, read an interview with two Olympic swimmers (one Malaysian, one American) as they compare their training schedules, their dreams and their favorite foods. Tripod also talks to Douglas Coupland about Pop Art, blue jeans and his latest book, "Polaroids from the Dead." The Great American Roadtrip continues, as Ethan and Rachel get distracted in South Dakota. As always, the Doctor is in. This week: Eating disorders, thyroid knots and your chance to play doctor. Diagnose "a burning in the right flank area" (Doc's words, not mine). And finally, don't miss the heated debate on RU-486. Should the abortion pill be made available?

Contests on Tripod
Our "Postcards from the Educated" Contest is over, and we are happy to share the winning entries with you.
In the inaugural issue of the Tripod Insider, I discussed the joys and pitfalls of running a web server. Tripod has grown quite a bit since then and our servers are incredibly busy. The tech boys are looking to get more hardware and the way they talk about machines sounds suspiciously like a fishing story. Every time Jon and Jeff speak to Bruce, the Beancounter, the servers just keep getting bigger and bigger. I think they are up to the Commodore Ultra Alpha Tetrahedron Model 20, which comes with a year's supply of Mountain Dew.While the tech boys are upgrading the servers, Emma was expanding her athletic skills. Matt Hall, an R&D; intern, started teaching Emma to play tennis. Despite getting hit in the head a couple times, Emma quite enjoyed herself. The next day her wrist was so sore that she could barely type and kept dropping things: papers, keys, forkfuls of food to name a few.
On a fuzzier note, Matt McGough, our Marketing intern, gave Janet a baseball autographed by former Major League catcher Carlton Fisk, one of her childhood heroes. She was totally surprised and touched -- to the point of getting weepy. It was definitely an Insider moment.
