Tripod Insider

Vol. 2, No. 30

December 6, 1996

Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. The Insider took a break last week for the Thanksgiving Holiday, but we're back in a big way, both with new content and office fodder.

Content And Services

Keep your eyes peeled for TriTeca, a BRAND NEW SECTION on Tripod: If you never thought you'd see the words "down to earth" and "writing about the Internet" in the same room together, then think again. Dedicated to the culture of the Web and the art of the Home Page, TriTeca is here to put a human face onto that machine on your desk -- a friendly, one-stop-shopping tech resource for the total newbie and beyond. TriTeca will serve up hype-free features for everyone who's interested in the Internet, plus invaluable tips, and -- of course, most importantly -- tools for expressing yourself on the Web. Coming soon to your screen!

A newly overhauled Tripod Homepage Builder also moves to TriTeca. The Novice Builder has been upgraded to our new QuickPage builder. QuickPage lets you build Web pages without the hassle of learning HTML, with a variety of options to create and edit attractive, distinctive pages. Each step in the QuickBuilder is documented and easy to follow. More experienced page builders will appreciate the ability to edit the HTML source code. Now there's no excuse for not having a homepage.

WORK & MONEY

Harry Goldstein wraps up his two-part primer on the writing life with "Freelance Finance." Taxes, write-offs, expenditures, budgeting -- they all change when you go into business for yourself. Our intrepid self-employed writer/editor will get you started down the right path with some solid tips for aspiring wordsmiths.

Margaret McFee did her job building a bullet-proof computer network so well that her employer decided the system was strong enough to run without her. Now she's "Downsized and Out," and her guest column puts a highly personal (and funny) spin on the current craze for outplacement.

Finally, in this week's "Tool for Thought" we review "Windows on the Workplace," Joan Greenbaum's explosive take on the relationship between techno-centric job environments and the end of permanent employment.

Randy Williams, Editor

POLITICS & COMMUNITY

Sure high school sucked, but what about college? No parents, no responsibilities, time to read, why quit that? In the second part of his "unschooling" series, William Upski Wimsatt explains why he dropped out of college and what he plans to do about it.

Unschooling is a great idea, but who has the chutzpah to actually quit high school? Meet seven teenagers who have taken that risk.

To commemorate the "Day Without Art," Merritt Colaizzi asked ninth graders at the local high school here in Williamstown to create panels emblematic of how AIDS has affected their lives.

Josh Glenn, Editor

HOMELIFE

In the Women's Room, it's all breasts this week. Bernadette Noll cries "Release Me!" in an essay about corset domination, and I reply "In Defense of the Wonderbra." Are you for cleavage? Take a peek!

Hannah Satz travels across the Libyan desert in the wake of Alexander the Great, and discovers that even an asphalt road reveals ancient footsteps:

And Doctor Bob, of course, is in. This week, read about anemia and exercise tolerance, skin tags, and how to lose weight the right way (no formulas involved).

Tripod Insider

The Tripod Insider officially welcomes Michelle Chihara, editor of Tripod's soon-to-be-launched technology section, TriTeca. I don't know if it's Tripod or the colder weather, but Michelle was out sick after working a grand total of just three days. I guess moving to Williamstown from New York was too much of a shock to her system.

Also up from New York, our adman Jodi Council made his monthly pilgrimage to Williamstown last week. Jodi enjoys getting away from the hectic city life for a little time in the country. Sure, there's the peace and quiet, the fresh air, and plenty of small town charm, but all Jodi ever wants to do is hit the local WalMart. He claims that they don't have those in the city.

In addition to the nearby WalMart, one of the perks of working for Tripod is the occasional chance at fame. This week, editorial assistants Lori and Dan have been recruited as models for an upcoming Tripod advertisement. You see, here at Tripod, we work your mind AND your body.
