Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. This month Tripod's servers experience some hiccups, our resident alien becomes street legal, and R and D goes organic. Read more about the office news following what's new on Tripod.
Content and Services
This week Tripod is launching our newest section, Planet Tripod, ensuring that we will never have just three sections. Planet Tripod was created especially for Tripod members. Not only will you find popular interactive services such as Homepage Builder, Reminder Minder, and Resume Builder here, but we've added features and services for members to get to know each other and help each other out.Tripod's Top Twenty showcases twenty member homepages that we think are interesting and worth visiting. Nominate your own page, if you think it's worthy. If you need some help with your homepage, Planet Tripod has a variety of page building resources, including tips and tricks from fellow members and well as a Homepage Dilemma where you can pose your own problem or help other members with theirs.
Member Profiles is another great feature. You can create a brief biographical note telling other Tripod members about yourself. This is brand new, so I encourage all Tripod members to build their profiles.
Don't forget to check out our weekly columns. Some features this week include, Employees Want More and Execs Should Listen, In Defense of Wiggers, and You Can't Be Too Rich, Too Thin Or Too Litigious: An Ode in Awe of the Law.
Contests on Tripod
Outside of Planet Tripod, we've extended the deadline on our Smart Quotes contest until May 15th. Write 200-300 words about work, and you could win $400 for travel on the airline of your choice. Can you believe it, a contest on Tripod and you get more than a T-shirt!
After serving the Tripod website without incident for most of the year, our server was down for most of a Saturday a couple of weeks ago. As it turns out, we blew a fuse in our newest Sparc 20. Although the tech suite claims it was a hardware problem, I still think that Jon, one of our Web Engineers, had the hair dryer on high for too long. The server is all right now, but Jon's hair lacks the bounce it once had.More notable news is that Emma, our Living and Travel editor and British citizen, received a visa to stay in the country. She can now spend less time trying to get married for citizenship and more time writing. In other staff news, Tripod welcomes Janet Daly, who joins us as the Production Editor. She has a wealth of technical experience and loves to cook, so she'll be teaching the editors Unix and the tech suite how to bake.
The Research and Development department's newest project is decidedly non-technical. Ethan and Nate are planting a garden outside the office.
This project is a bit risky because if nothing grows they can't blame it on the operating system, although I did hear them say they were trying to upgrade the top soil to version 2.4. They also claim to have figured out how to run a Linux box off a potato.
