Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 29

July 18, 1997

Welcome to the Tripod Insider. This week, we party with the stars in Williamstown — at least, those of us who can still walk do, and we welcome (shocker!) another new employee. Read all about it after we tell you what's new on Tripod.

Content And Services

NEW IN THE WOMEN'S ZONE

In the final installment of "Where the Girls Are: Making Movies," Sarah Jacobson interviews Kristine Peterson, director of "Slaves to the Underground," the story of an all-girl rock band in Seattle. They talk about B-movies, Roger Corman, and how to direct a sex scene.

If you missed the earlier installments, you'll find interviews with Jennie Livingston (who took vogueing national), Tula Asselanis (who made a documentary about Barbie), and Tamra Davis (the only director the Hanson Brothers will work with). Plus, why we need "Girls Like Us."

Then join in the final week of the Flick Chicks conference to discuss screen idols, girls' coming-of-age films, and the filmmakers who bring you the women you want to see.

Finally: I asked for mail, and I got it. I'll be posting the first few letters from you in the Editor's Room this week.

NEW ON SCREENLIFE

So you've got a picture that you want on your Web page, and taping it to your monitor is no longer cutting the cake. It's time to learn how to scan, friends. Meet J.R. "Bob" Dobbs, cult hero of the infamous Church of the SubGenius. He'll be your graphic for the day. Follow as his likeness gets scanned in and saved, making him Web-ready. Just upload, and go! This LifeSupport is brought to you by Web/Tech.

Plus, add your two cents to the Web/Tech conference. We're getting confessions about peoples' first time (going online, of course). And let the world know where you stand on Internet censorship!

Tripod Insider

Insider readers will recall that our beancounter, Bruce, has been limping around the office with a broken ankle for a couple of months, and now it seems he's started quite a trend. VP of Ad Sales Jodi Council was in a car wreck over the weekend (he's okay, but he's sporting a new neck brace), and Associate Editor Lori Tuckett has a full-on leg brace. She popped her knee out of its socket — get this — while out walking her cat. Don't ask.

But the news isn't all crippling this week. Saturday night, Tripod hosted a beer-tasting party to benefit the Williamstown Theatre Festival (though it really must be said, everyone benefits from a good beer-tasting party). The dancing, the drinks, and the too-hip Hollywood-esque nightlife attracted well over two hundred guests, including film star Eric Stoltz, who "communicated" with Tripod Communicatrix Kara Berklich for a bit out on the dance floor. And TIME says London is the world's coolest city!

Finally, Tripod welcomes Alissa Quart, who joins our New York office as an associate editor for our print projects. She's one of those child-of-New-York-intellectuals prodigy types who is as comfortable discussing an obscure linguistics-oriented school of poetry as she is discussing the most recent episode of Party of Five. She'll be keeping Matt, Jodi, and Nadine on their toes, you can count on that.
