Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 36

September 5, 1997

Welcome to the Tripod Insider. Quite a few empty chairs are scattered around the office this week after Tripod bid farewell to a fine crop of summer interns. Read the news after seeing what's new on the site.

Content And Services

NEW IN WHEELS

This week in Wheels, we show you how to give your car some loving. In "My Date with Joe," Sunny Andersen explains basic car care in six easy steps, and makes a case for why car care is sexy and grease is cool. Spike Gillespie explains the joy of mechanics and the items you should always keep in your car (even if you don't want grease on your hands). And finally, the Car Care Reminder will tell you when to give your car all this good loving. It's all in "Car Care 101."

—Emma Taylor, Wheels editor

NEW IN THE WOMEN'S ZONE

In the final installment of our series on motherhood — "Working Mother" — Sarah Jacobson talks to filmmaker Allison Anders (director of "Gas Food Lodging") about her three children, why you should birth without drugs, and how she was the first director to list daycare providers in her film's credits.

Then, join the Women's Room conference on Motherhood to discuss working mothers, birthing methods, single mothers, and more. Hosted by Celina Hex of Bust.

And if you missed the earlier installments, check out "Soon Enough a Mama ," about the pregnant pause and why you don't need advice, and "Crazy Mama!" — a plea to treat new mothers like normal people. Plus, your last chance to take the Motherhood Poll.

Finally, new letters in the Editor's Room (Baby Spice comes clean; the Princess of Hearts makes us all sad), a new Web review, and a new Web Filter (on Diana, of course). All in the Women's Room.

—Emma Taylor, Women's Room editor

NEW IN HEALTH/SPORTS

Did you know that some people are born with too many ribs? Well this week , Dr. Bob talks about this peccadillo, along with abusive relationships and undescended testicles, and Dr. Migdow schools us on the allure of holistic medicine.

Last week, we discovered that only 34% of Tripodians floss their teeth daily... and only 16% of them had the slightest idea how gross that is! So don't forget to test your knowledge of health trivia with our weekly Ask the Doctors quick quiz.

—Lori Tuckett, Health Editor

NEW IN WEB/TECH

Are we at the beginning of a new artistic revolution, one which celebrates audience participation, the intensely personal, the blurring of disciplines, and the collaborative experience? Jason Teague thinks so. Read all about "Web Art" in YourLife.

The latest Rockstar Font from Chank Diesel and Tripod's new Premium Membership Image Library aren't the only things waiting for you in LifeSupport. This week we tell you how to get to Browser Heaven, that magical land where every free plug-in you ever wanted dangles temptingly for the plucking.

Tripod's beloved beancounter Bruce Ludemann is off to a racing start with Carburetor Junction, the Pod for car lovers of every sort. Got a page that needs a Pod? An idea for a Pod? Or just want to browse some great examples of personal publishing by genre? Drop by PodLife.

— Josh Glenn, acting Web/Tech editor

Man — things are getting lonely around here! With the summer coming to a close, Tripod has had to say goodbye to its talented crew of summer interns, which means that we full-timers have to put down our tropical cocktails, take off our sunglasses, and get back to work. Aaron Dubrow, Derek Sasaki-Scanlon, Negeen Pegahi, and Sarah Thurston each packed up and returned to school within a span of about three weeks, leaving the rest of us scrambling to piece together what exactly we did without them.

But don't worry about us; we're still finding people to fill the empty chairs before they have a chance to get cold. This week we welcome Mike Dye to the family as a software engineer. Mike strolled into the office at about noonish on his first day on the job, which isn't always the best way to kick things off. We cut him a little slack, though, seeing as how he drove straight in from Colorado. And you think your commute is tough.
