This past weekend was a fairly social time for Tripodians. Friday evening, Ethan lead a crowd of us, with friends and families in tow, to Pittsfield where we descended on Waconah Field to watch the Pittsfield Mets do battle with the visiting NJ Cardinals. Throwing out the first pitch was literary great Herman Melville (or at least his P.R. facsimile). It was a perfect evening for "grassroots" baseball, with the setting sun blazing in our eyes. The Mets won 4-3 (we believe due to our being there to cheer them on), and everyone had a great time.
Saturday was another picture-perfect day, so a dozen of us caravaned off to Saratoga to enjoy the first 1998 weekend of horse racing at Saratoga Raceway. Bruce Ludemann and Mike Merrill coached the rest of us in the mysteries of placing a $2 bet, and by the 5th race we all knew what "exacta" and "boxing" meant and were studying the racing forms and numerous monitor screens like OTB regulars. Jenny Wienert noted that this may be the only place one might hear the phrase "Lucky TV." By the end of the day we were all winners from spending a lovely day in the sun. At least, that's what we told ourselves. Bruce was the only one to return home with the big bucks, but we don't begrudge him as he treated us all to steak that night to celebrate.
