    The Weather Pod Newsletter

    September 30, 1999

    Greetings!

Folks, I have a lot to talk about this month, so I will try my best to keep this short. However, before we start, let me first state that you are recieving this newsletter becaused you signed up for it. If you'd like to be unsubscribed, please visit our newsletter page and follow the on-screen instructions.

My state of North Carolina got rampaged a gain by another storm. This time his name was Floyd, and he will not soon be forgotten.

Hurricane Floyd reached near category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson Scale of Hurricane Intensity. At its strongest point, it had sustained winds of 155 MPH. Before hitting North Carolina and the Northeastern US, Floyd made landfall on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas with winds of 150 MPH, destroying much in its path. After devastating the Bahamas, Floyd edged dangerously close to the US coast.

As Floyd menaced the coast, over 3 million residents from Florida to Virginia were evacuated causing massive traffic jams and filling hotel rooms as far inland as Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. Floyd did finally make landfall in North Carolina as a strong category 2, almost category 3 hurricane with winds of 110 MPH. Floyd unleashed dozens of tornadoes, deadly wind and, in some places, over 15-20 inches of rain. Floyd caused flooding from South and North Carolina up into New England over the 36 hours is visited the US. Estimated are still coming in, but damages are expected to be between 5 and 10 billion dollars. Floyd is also blamed on around 50 deaths.

Floyd was declared the worst environmental disasterin North Carolina history. Even after two weeks, flooding continues in many places. Recent rains have also agrivated the flooding.

On a personal note, Floyd is the worst disaster I have lived through. Thank god I wasn't in the hardest hit flooded areas. I think that I may miss the next hurricane.

Now that life is normal again, Best of Pod is now operational. About every 2 weeks I will go through the pod pages looking for the next Best of Pod. Keep those sites updated and looking smart (as they always do) and you'll make the choice even more difficult....I love difficult choices!

I will reschedule a pod chat date at another time. The last chat date was cancelled because of Hurricane Dennis, then with Hurricane Floyd I never got around to making another date. Look for that e-mail soon.

Well, this closes another pod newsletter. take care and have a Happy Autum!
