Ettelbruck
Ettelbruck proudly proclaims itself the "Gateway to the Ardennes." Maybe residents make so much noise about the designation because this town of 6,500 has little else to offer travelers. There's the Musée Patton (13 Grand-Rue, tel. 8-20-68), which has leftover goodies from the Battle of the Bulge, but you have to be a big World War II fan to enjoy it. Still, the city is a bus and train hub for northern Luxembourg, so you might have to make a pit stop here. The tourist office (tel. 8-20-68; open daily 9-noon and 1:30-5), at the train and bus station, has a free map of a few hikes around the city, but you can also buy excellent hiking maps for the northern and southern halves of the country (130LF each). A couple of trains travel every hour from Ettelbruck to Luxembourg City (35 min, 140LF).
