Berkeley Guide to Europe:
Luxembourg
By Joshua Skov
Although Luxembourg is the smallest country in the European Union, it has its act together--its standard of living is one of the highest in Europe. Residents know that world headlines will never be shaped by what takes place here, but their political powerlessness has its advantages. Unlike Germany, Luxembourg faces no national struggle with its past; unlike Britain, it doesn't wrestle with its role in the European Union; unlike Greece, it has no serious conflicts with its neighbors. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg packs dense forests and pristine countryside into its small space, and the 1,000-year-old capital city (creatively named Luxembourg City) has a spectacular setting worth checking out. The country is usually overlooked as a travel destination--except by a few diehard passport-stamp collectors--but if any place exhibits "small-town charm" on a national scale, this is it.
