Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 26

June 27, 1997

Welcome to the Tripod Insider — your source for all things Tripod. As if the construction workers don't have enough to do in the new office, we're starting to break things here. Read about that and our latest new faces after the editors tell you about all the new stuff on the site.

Content And Services

Starting in July, you'll notice big changes on the Tripod Web site. TriTeca, everybody's favorite homepage building resource, is about to blossom into Web/Tech, everybody's favorite center for homepage building and personal publishing. Also set to enter full bloom are Tripod veterans Daily Scoop, Women's Room, and fun_games. Meanwhile, Tripod comes out smelling like a rose, with even more streetsmart strategies for work, money, living... and now health and fitness, too (check out our new Health section). Hot-cha!

WORK & MONEY

DIY rides again in this week's Work and Money section with a veritable smorgasbord of helpful hints and inspirations for creating a money-making venture. In part three of Lisa Shaw's "Cottage Industry" series, the best-selling author of "The Under 35 Guide to Starting and Running Your Business" shows you the nuts and bolts of setting up shop.

Next, Leah and Elina Furman suggest that there might be cash in caring for critters; the third of their "Small Business Brainstorms" explains how to start a pet-sitting service.

Then meet a DIY success story: Torbjorn "Tobe" Hanson, a stress-relieving Swede who pioneered a method for easing aches and pains.

Finally, tell us about your DIY role model in this week's Work and Money survey.

LIVING & TRAVEL

Remember vogueing? Well, director Jennie Livingston is probably the reason why. Her documentary, "Paris is Burning," (about gay black men who vogued) helped spur a national craze. This week, in part three of "Where the Girls Are," Sarah Jacobson chats with Jennie about bossy directors, role models, and the most unfundable script in America.

Then, in the Flick Chicks conference, join in this week's new topic: Jennie Livingston said the film she's currently working on is about how women deal with idols. So this week's topic is all about unadulterated worship: Who are your idols on screen (be they the fictional characters or the women who play them)?

Did you miss last week's Barbie Quiz? There's still time to test your Barbie smarts — and the highest scorers win a free copy of Tula Asselanis's Barbie documentary "I, Doll."

Speaking of idols, Doctor Bob has some words of wisdom for you. He assures one Tripod member that no, marijuana is not addictive, and explains to another how the coxsackie B virus works.

TRITECA

You can call him Otis, or you can call him O — capital or lowercase, it doesn't matter. Otis B of the rock band Fluf painted us a tasty tidbit of typographic eye candy. Then, using Chank Diesel's patented fontmaking technique, the eye candy morphed into the Cheesewidler font. Exercise your own alphabet savvy with this latest downloadable Rockstar Font, exclusively at TriTeca.

An office isn't really a home until someone breaks something, so last weekend, Ethan stepped up to the plate — plate glass, that is. Our intrepid veep of R & D managed to shatter a breakroom window Saturday in what can only be termed a brazen act of vandalism. Actually, Ethan claims he was just trying to open the window, and if so, he certainly succeeded. In any case, I guess now we can all stop tip-toeing around this place — it's a home!

That said, we'd like to welcome to our home our latest batch of new folks. With all the fresh blood around here, it's getting difficult to keep track of who's who, but this week's unrecognizable faces are Aaron Dubrow, intern for the Daily Scoop, and Chris Johnson, a production assistant coming to us all the way from Boston. Welcome aboard, boys — you can pick up your name tags over in personnel.

One nice feature of Tripod that perhaps Aaron and Chris didn't know about is our "You Too Can Be C.E.O." advancement policy. Sounds great, except that C.E.O. in this instance stands for "Certified Elevator Operator." We're on floor three of a factory, you see, and it's not everyone who can figure out an industrial lift like the one we use to haul everything from computers to office supplies to our crutch-bound beancounter, Bruce. So good luck, fellas.
