Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 46

November 13, 1997

Welcome to another Tripod Insider. This week, Bruce cleans house, and Janet (our ex-Production Manager) spills her guts — literally! Read the rest after checking out what's new on Tripod.

Content And Services

NEW IN THE WOMEN'S ZONE

My mum asked me last night if I'd heard "that Barbie song" yet — which makes girl power about as official as the rumor that Kevin Spacey is gay. But, does "girl power" really empower, or is it little more than a wardrobe change? Marni Davis thinks girl power is trying too hard to make boys like it; Susannah Breslin thinks feminists need to get a clue and start celebrating all that is girly. Read what they have to say, and then join the fray in the Women's Room Conference.

—Emma Taylor, Women's Room Editor

NEW IN WEB/TECH

Text elements fly onto the screen from every angle — some spinning, others zooming. A backdrop fades in and sets the scene. A cartoon character walks on and winks at the viewer. No, it's not a TV ad. It could be your homepage — Josh On wants to teach you how to use Flash. What are you waiting for?

—Maria Trimarchi, Assistant Editor, Community

NEW IN WORK

Is Social Security doomed? Depends who you talk to... Harry Goldstein took a hard look at the troubled retirement system and came up with a somewhat hopeful view. Eric Kingson, co-editor of "Social Security in the 21st Century," admits there are problems — but says the hysteria over SS's impending collapse is overblown. Cartoonist/columnist Ted Rall is less upbeat — but armed with a scathing wit — in his classic rant "Have to Die Before I Get Old."

—Randy Williams, Work Editor

NEW IN COMMUNITY

Welcome to the wonderful world of Pods! Pods are online communities of people who want to hang out with (here's the surprise) other people. New pods are being born every week, so keep looking for a place you can call home. Be sure to check out this week's newest Pod, The Activism Pod!

—Maria Trimarchi, Assistant Editor, Community

NEW IN HEALTH/SPORTS

Do you speak the language of love? Study up on your Pillow Talk, courtesy of Bob Berkowitz. Read his answers to your questions on sex and relationships, then join his hosted conference — after all, it's not every day that you have an in-house relationship expert at your beck and call! And don't forget to check-in with Dr. Bob. This week, he answers questions on knee pain, ear infections, and HIV.

—Lori Tuckett, Health Editor

ALSO NEW ON TRIPOD

This week in the Daily Scoop: Buddhist Babes and the Hollywood Hunks they Love! Plus: Pork! And: Whatever Happened to the News?! Oh, yes, the Scoop's hoppin' — and you'd better hop on 'fore it's all full up! The Daily Scoop: Filtering the best stuff on the Web for you every day, since 1942.

Every Friday, one of the friendly Tripod Webserfs shares a short note about life in the Silicon Boonies. This week, software engineer Bob Galloway takes you behind the scenes of the newly-launched of Science Fiction Pod. The truth is right here... and it's stranger than fiction.

Meet the Gobble-nator... He's travelled here from a time when turkeys ruled the Earth, to kill off all the pilgrims, so that the barbaric tradition of Thanksgiving will never have a chance to begin. And, as always, the fun_games is packed with jokes, toys, games, and other innovations to keep you entertained throughout your day.

Tripod Insider

Last summer, Emma's roommate, who works at Storey Communications, invited us Tripodians to model for a series of informational "wellness" brochures. We had forgotten all about that until yesterday, when the first three brochures arrived in the office. "Effective Stretching" was illustrated with a photo of Emma stretching (although it was hard to recognize our resident aesthete in that athletic gear), and how to "Just Be Yourself" was aptly demonstrated by our HR Director, David, who is very much himself. The prize for Most Revealing Photo, however, went to Janet (our ex-Production Manager), who was the model for "Digestive Enzymes." Janet was always good at spilling her guts, but we didn't really want to SEE them...

In more news, Friday night was poker night at the office — and Bruce the bean counter cleaned up! (Rumor has it he kept goading everyone into betting more money, and making fun of Nick because he's such a conservative player.) All the tech boys were poker whizzes, of course; but Advertising Producer Josh Field lost about $25 total (and they were only playing change!). Best of all, Bruce let us smoke cigars in the office. Add to that the cans of Budweiser (wide mouth) and it was quite a night! Oh, and Jon Butler showed up to play, too. But Ed wasn't there, so there's still no confirmation that Ed isn't really Jon in disguise.
