1.) Thumbnail
Extraction & Creation. Thumber can
extract thumbnails from JPG files that contain an
embedded thumnail. Depending on the camera, the
images are usually 80x60 or 160x120 pixels large,
and a few examples are in the left margin of this
page. Thumber can now also create thumbnail
images for any JPG files, regardless of whether
they contain an embedded thumbnail. Thumber can
process single images, multiple images, or
multiple directories simultaneously, producing
thumbnails for every digital image in your
collection in one pass! 2.) Web Page Creation. Thumber can create "contact-sheet" style web pages with thumbnails linked to the full-sized originals. Thumber can create a web page for just one file, several files or multiple directories. When creating a web page Thumber can also extract and include information about the images in which it finds a thumbnail. Depending on the type of camera, Thumber is able to determine time, date, file size, flash, aperture, zoom setting, shutter, picture number, resolution and compression information from most pictures, and can estimate focal length, scene brightness and exposure value. Thumber can also create a master index page with links to all of the individual contact sheet pages -- ideal for cataloging a large collection of images before burning onto CD. 3.) Batch Image resizing. When creating a web page, Thumber can now create resized versions of the original images. The images can be resized to any dimensions and saved at a user-defined level of JPG compression. This is useful for displaying images on the web where smaller file sizes mean faster download times. 4.) File Renaming & Redating. Thumber performs batch renaming of image files using the information contained within. Thumber can process one file, multiple files in the same directory, or all files contained in multiple directories in one pass. Files can be renamed with their date, time, size, flash settings, etc.... Thumber can also change a file's time/date stamp to correspond with the time/date information reported in the image. This feature is useful if you have downloaded an image using a serial cable and the time/date stamp corresponds to the download time, not the image capture time. 5.) Image Information Retrieval & Reporting. Thumber can display all of the raw EXIF or APP12 data contained in an image file. Load the file into the viewer and display the image properties to see a complete listing. Thumber can also create a text report containing the information contained within one or more image files, or tab delimited file suitable for importing into a spreadsheet. Thumber can process single images, multiple images, or multiple directories simultaneously. Thumber can also merge multiple image report files into one master file. 6.) Comments. Thumber can add, append, remove and read comments embedded within a JPG file. These comments do not affect the appearance/display of an image in any way, but can be used to store user-defined information within an image. These comments can be included in the web page created by Thumber. Since the comments are added as text, you can use the Windows 95/98 "Find Files and Folders" feature to search your JPG files for comments inserted by Thumber. Thumber can process single or multiple images simultaneously. (Note: This feature invloves modifying the data in the image file. You should always make a backup of any image in which you choose to insert a comment. It is unlikely that Thumber can damage a file while inserting a comment, but it is better to be safe than sorry!) 7.) Lossless Image Manipulation. Thumber also acts as a "front-end" for JPEGTRAN, a freely available DOS program for "loss-less" JPEG image rotation based on source code from the Independent JPEG Group. JPEGTRAN allows you to rotate and transform images without incurring any quality degradation that occurs using most other image editing software. JPEGTRAN is included with Thumber, although you can download it separately from the SIMTEL FTP software archive or any of its mirrors. JPEGTRAN should be placed in the same directory as Thumber or anywhere in the DOS path (e.g. C:\Windows\command). You do not need this file to access the rest of Thumber's features. 8.) File Transfer. Thumber can transfer files between a source and destintation directories, such as a removeable memory card reader and a hard-drive. Select the Transfer tab and choose a source and destination directory to activate this feature. Thumber can also be set to automatically transfer files between directories upon startup. |
Notes: In order for Thumber to extract a thumbnail and/or image information, the image must be in its original form, as downloaded from the camera. Most (but not all) image editing software will remove thumbnails and information, and Thumber will not be able to work. Thumber only accepts images with a ".jpg" extension.
Download Thumber: Thumber is written in Visual Basic 6 and requires the latest Visual Basic 6 runtime files to operate. Click here to see the files you'll need and how to get them.
