Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 1

January 3, 1997

Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. Read Tripod's Year in Review after the editors tell you what's on this week.

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY

Beth Kobliner, the best-selling author of "Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your 20s and 30s," checks in with a new "Personal Money Matters" column on saving money by shopping around for the best bank (and no, she doesn't mean the one with the tastiest lollipops).

Next, nationally-known tax expert Eva Rosenberg kicks off her new Tripod column "Tax Bytes" with an eye-opening piece on ways to rack up some serious deductions by hiring family members to run your home business. Start learning how to keep those rabid weasels at the IRS at bay with "All in the Family."

Harry Goldstein reviews "The End of Work" -- a startling non-fiction book that dares to imagine a future in which technology and automation have rendered workers redundant -- in this week's Tool for Thought.

Finally, be sure to offer advice to a woman facing subtle sexism on the job in this week's Dilemma, and share your New Year's Work & Money Resolutions in this week's Survey.

HOMELIFE

This week in the Women's Room, Bernadette Noll has puberty on her mind (teen spleen, your hormones and you...however you remember it). You'll probably never feel puberty nostalgia, but Bernadette discovers that there's something to learn by revisiting the past -- and you might just make puberty a nicer place.

You'll never have to go through puberty again. And that's not the only good news on Tripod this week. We've found a way to make guilt-free New Year's resolutions. Make them for someone else, then if they get broken, who are you to blame? Resolve to make other people better, in the survey.

And Doctor Bob is in, with advice on diseases I can't even pronounce. If you don't have pernicious anemia or polycythemia vera, check out his archive for help on the flu, penis size and much more. Or ask him your own question.

Emma Taylor, Editor

TRITECA

You can't stop time, but you can put it on a Web page. Rick Smolan talks to Tripod about a day in the life of cyberspace.

Dithered graphics? Illegible pages? Have no fear, Gif Girl is here. Join the fight for truth, justice and better homepages.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse, except the ones on mousepads... See how the big cheeses in the Web industry spent their holidays.

Steve Jobs re-unites with Apple, and the computer world is turned on its ear. Margaret McFee helps Apple users see where they stand, given the unexpected news.

Steal this page! The Page Slave gives you some jump-start short-cuts for HTML.

POLITICS & COMMUNITY

This week, we pick the most humorous, inscrutable and bizarre survey comments sent in by Tripod members during the past year. Remember what you said about the Montana Freeman? or Pat Buchanan? Well, we do, and we've given you "rewards."

What goes around comes around. Newt Gingrich has been under fire recently for admitted ethical lapses. Should he remain Speaker of the House? Tell us in the survey.

Michael Agger and Josh Glenn, Co-Editors

Tripod Insider

Happy New Year! The Tripod Insider has chronicled the events on -- and off -- the Tripod Web site for a little over a year now and as Tripod sets its sites on 1997, the time is ripe for the Insider Year in Review. The following are snapshots of some the best and worst Insider moments; some of which didn't quite make the regular Insider.

Injury of the year

Although Randy's bloody leg was a gruesome sight for some time, Bruce continues to be the most injury-prone Tripodian. He's suffered all sorts of cuts and bruises in the line of duty, not least of which was a broken rib, won while sledding with the gang.

Office Phrase of the Year

Coined by the Insider, "Getting Bo'ed" is what happens when, without warning, our CEO storms into your office and needs something by tomorrow morning. It all happens so fast that you usually don't have any time to object.

Pet of the Year

The staff can be so boring at times that the Insider has occasionally resorted to talking about the office pets. Although Tri-pup was an incredibly cute puppy, he lost most of his charm as he got older, not to mention after leaving several "surprises" around the office. Tri-pup moved away in search of more disk space, so Trixie, the Tripod cat, is by default the new office favorite.

Best Tech Toy

The Tech boys will speak volumes about how excited they are about all their new servers, especially their Mitsubishi 3000 Ultra something or other. But for the rest of us, the best tech toy has got to be the beeper that Jon wears. Now, any time of the day, if the mail is not working or if I just can't turn my computer on, I can call Jon. Sometimes we call really early in the morning just to see when they'll be coming in that day. It's great.

Biggest Surprise

Without a doubt, Tripod's growth in the past year, both in terms of membership and as a company, has taken all of us by surprise. In 1996 Tripod membership has grown from just over 15,000 members to well over 150,000 members, while our staff has nearly tripled from 11 to 29 full time employees.
