Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 15

April 11, 1997

Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. The week the Insider welcomes another new employee and explores the angst caused by an injury, in verse. Check out the office gossip after the editors tell you what's new on the site.

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY

Fed up with the 9-to-5 grind? This week's "Do It Yourself" theme will help point you down the path to self-employment success. Lisa Shaw, best-selling author of "The Under 35 Guide to Starting and Running Your Business," kicks off her six-part "Cottage Industries" series with tips on building your business strategy.

So you want to be an entrepreneur... but you're fresh out of brilliant business ideas? Leah and Elina Furman suggest you "Wake Up and Smell the Profits" in part one of their "Small Business Brainstorms" series.

Freelancers, small business owners, and self-employed types have their own set of IRS worries, but Eva Rosenberg is here to help with her latest installment of "Tax Bytes."

Work & Money is planning a special theme week for May which will look at the ways people in various jobs, careers, and office environments spend their working days. You can contribute now by answering our survey on office hours... Careful, we may quote you!

And be sure to get more out of each work day by participating in our Work Smart conference.

POLITICS & COMMUNITY

As "Personal Media" month continues in Politics & Community, zine publisher Josh Glenn asks "What puts the 'zine' in e-zine?" Is every homepage devoted to someone's baby photos an e-zine, or does it require something... else? Find out.

Also, Tripod's man in the field Billy "Upski" Wimsatt interviews the 26-year-old founder of PHAT LIP, Little Rock's amazing youth-run talk radio program. Open your ears:

In this week's survey, let us know which magazines, radio shows, Web sites, and other forms of media REALLY appeal to you, and which ones that are supposed to be aimed at you totally miss the mark.

And make sure you drop by the "Personal Media" conference topic in the "Media Savvy" conference. Now that we've finished dissecting the elusive "meta-zine," we've turned our attention to Howard Stern (personal media hero or villain?). Join in!

That's not all! This week we launch a new feature: The Wild Card. Every couple of weeks, cutting-edge social/political critics will get up on a soapbox in P&C; and discuss... whatever's on their minds. Tom Frank, editor of The Baffler (THE journal of cultural criticism), gets us started with his scathing take on "Jerry Maguire."

TRITECA

Get inside the mind of a techie. Hacker Life gives you the confessions of a tech dilettante, in Perspective.

Hey, don't be embarrassed: Everybody has one. Eye Site looks at one writer's indispensable HTML book.

The Web is dead! Long live the Web! A clear-eyed look at the end of the Internet Gold Rush, on the Lemming Report.

If you file now, you may still make it in time... Part two of our guide to dealing with life's other sure thing (online), in Ware/Howz.

Tripod's very own Chitchat, goddess of the personal chat rooms, continues her lesson in being the very best chat admin that you can be, in Page Slave.

LIVING & TRAVEL

We're still in the Kitchenette, and this time we're wielding sharp objects. Pableaux Johnson explains how to get the best knives for your money, and how to make them last.

In the Women's Room, Candi Strecker goes public with her Martha Stewart obsession, and makes a case for the housewife gonzo approach to life. Then in the survey, talk back to Candi: Is Martha Stewart a role model, a manipulating businesswoman, or a '50s throwback who has no business tempting women with the delights of housewifery?

And Doctor Bob is in, of course, to advise you on heart palpitations, cancer prevention, and gall bladder stones.

Tripod Insider

The Insider welcomes Derek Bruneau, the newest member of that wacky tech team. Derek has the fine distinction of being the only person in this start-up, venture-capital-backed, would-be public company ever to have actually worked on Wall Street.

As we continue to grow, another Tripodian was bound to injure him- or herself, and over the weekend Little Matty Quann (LMQ) took the honors. The Insider brings you his story, exactly as it appeared in his e-mail to his colleagues, creative punctuation and all:

  hi.
  i went snowboarding yesterday.
  it was hot.
  65 deg.
  t shirt weather.
  i had fun all day.
then on the last run towards the bottom i did a little flippy thing.
the snow was so wet where i landed that my board just stopped.
then i fell straight down on my wrist.
  it broke.(...yes, my right one)
i dont have a cast though, just a splint thing.
i can use my fingers, but cant rotate my wrist.
should be better in about a month.
i have to go to the bone doctor this week to have him check it out
  to be sure..
  my season is now over...

Now that's an inside scoop!
