Welcome to Sue's English home in Alaska!
Well, I am learning my way around Williamstown and the Tripod site during my second week here. I have explored the town's two commercial streets (Water and Spring) and stood transfixed by the town's only traffic light (upgraded from a blinking yellow to the real-changing- color-type). But at least I am not alone. Don LeClaire joins Tripod as Senior Software Engineer and Neil Bibbins joins us to take over Gayle O'Brien's job as Membership Assistant. Gayle is moving into the Editorial department, where she and Gail Burns intend to confuse everyone by being the editors named Gail/Gayle who have graduated from Sarah Lawrence College.
Adventure of the week: Senior Editor Emma Taylor, Software Engineer Brian Rogers and Designer Jay Patrikios set off for the City of Angels last Friday afternoon to visit former Tripod editors Dan Reines and Lori Tuckett, both of whom heeded the call "Go west, young person!" back in July. While this was ostensibly a pleasure trip, Brian had an ulterior motive in taking Emma and Jay along. He needed their help to carry Lori's two cats across country. These were carry-on cats, in special carrier bags. Apparently getting the cats into the bags at Brian's house was a breeze, but taking them out so that the bags could go through the scanner in the airport was another matter and Brian bears the scars to prove it. Moral of the story: It is better to have a cat scan than to let the cat out of the bag. OUCH!
The story does have a happy ending though. The cats feigned some interest in being reunited with Lori, everyone had a great time in L.A. and they all reappeared in scenic Billsville on Tuesday morning with scarcely a trace of jet lag.
