Nicknames. We've all had at least one at some point in our lives (whether they were flattering or not). It's amazing where nicknames come from, whether they're an abbreviation of our birth names, sports related, or just some random name that stuck one day. Around here, it seems almost everyone has a nickname: their e-mail address.
Some names just work well as email addresses: Editorial Director Bet Alwin becomes 'balwin,' Taxonomy Editor Adam Wienert becomes 'awienert,' and Gayle O'Brien becomes 'gobrien' (you can often hear someone chanting in true dance party style 'Go Brien! Go Brien!' Some sound like they even form real words. Colleen Harwood becomes 'charwood;' Sean Coon becomes 'scoon.' And Stephanie Haag, our International Product Manager, lovingly becomes 'shaag.' Even names that don't exactly flow have replaced first names. Many around here call Design Director David Reid, 'dreid,' even though 'David' is easy enough to say. Same for Producer Chris Young 'cyoung' just rolls off the tongue. Only Designer Jay Patrikios is able to retain his full name in this process: 'jpatrikios.'
The only Tripodian who has managed to escape being called by her e-mail address is Rebecca Foisy, who can't seem to shake the name BQ (i.e. Biology Queen) from her college days.
