Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. Although we like to imagine ourselves as a pretty clean-living crowd here at Tripod, this week's Insider (featuring toxic sludge, female condoms, an exotic dancer, and Personal Chat to boot) might give you a different impression. Read on!
Content And Services
Tripod's new Premium Membership offer has been selling like hotcakes -- better, really, since hotcakes aren't what they used to be. Those 5 extra megabytes of disk space for your Tripod homepage, that Personal Chat room of your very own, and all the other goodies that come with it... How can you resist? And remember, we're scheming at this very moment to give our Premium Members even MORE STUFF than they're already getting.How much of our attitude towards money -- both spending and saving it -- is inherited from our parents? 28-year-old personal finance wiz Ken Kurson looks back at his childhood for the answers in an honest and touching edition of his column "The Buck Starts Here."
In "coaching," the hot new trend in career counselling, a career coach works to "heal" those aspects of your life preventing you from reaching your work and money goals. Is this a breakthrough, or just a bunch of touchy-feely nonsense? Tell us after you read our interview with one such coach.
British poet David Whyte's "The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America" attempts to graft the chest-beating style of Robert Bly's "Iron John" onto a corporate survival manual; and don't forget to check out the new dilemma on contract negotiations, or the new survey on retirement planning. All this and much more awaits you in the Work & Money section -- drop by and get down to business.

This week in Perspective, Doug ponders, "Should I buy my mother WebTV?" In Eye Site, Travelling Font Salesman extraordinaire Chank Diesel gives away his secrets on how to make a font out of a scanned-in rendering of those 26 familiar little characters. In Ware/Howz, Scot Hacker gets hot and bothered over the poetry of the BeOS. And in Page Slave, we give away trade secrets for getting people to visit your homepage. There's more too, believe me. Come visit TriTeca and I'll tell you all about it.
Michelle Chihara, Editor
This week in Living and Travel, Spike Gillespie explains how she survived most of her adult life without health insurance. Ironically, as a newly-insured citizen, she finds herself more afraid of cancer than ever. Read her story in "Health (without) Insurance".
In the Women's Room, we offer a reality check. The Reality Female Condom, that is. It's expensive, it's not quite as good as the male version for preventing pregnancy, and worst of all -- it squeaks! But when it comes to better sex, the female condom may well be a girl's best friend.
Also this week, Doctor Bob checks in with his diagnosis of immature testicles, bacteria in the blood, and patella tendonitis. And in the survey, tell us how much you know about your health insurance plan, or how you get by without one. It's all in the Living and Travel section. Emma Taylor, Editor
POLITICS & COMMUNITY
As our "Media Month" continues in P&C;, co-editor Michael Agger provides the scoop on "Toxic Sludge Is Good For You," a scathing expose of the PR industry. If you truly want to be media-savvy, you need to know how this billion dollar industry influences the flow of information in society.
And in this week's survey, we ask you about that hottest of all topics: Ebonics. What up with that?
In case you haven't noticed, we've added a new feature to the Politics & Community page. It's the "Editor's Corner," and every single day Josh and Mike (OK, with a little help from our friends) point you to a new and different P&C-related; Web site which we think you'll dig. That's every day, in P&C.;

News From The Front: Tripod on CNNfn
Tripod produces a bi-monthly segment on CNNfn's IT'S ONLY MONEY (M-F 6-7 p.m. EST) show called "News from the Front," hosted by our Editorial Director Josh Glenn. On Friday, January 17th, Josh will discuss that "You, Inc." thing we've been hearing so much about, and he'll explain why you don't have to be a high-powered exec to take advantage of the latest thinking in career-surfing.Tripod's "News from the Front" will air at 6:40 p.m. EST, and it does accept questions from the viewing audience. Call in! (At 6:44, call 1-800-304-FNET.)
Just when we thought the New Year's festivities had finally died down, this past week both Kara (our Communicatrix) and Margaret (our Creative Director) celebrated their birthdays. The ladies treated themselves to some serious massages -- as they're fond of saying, "We paid someone to rub us" -- but Kara's evening festivities took a decidedly exotic turn as she was treated (or subjected, depending on who you ask) to a, well, revealing modern dance interpretation of the Black Crowes' version of "Hard to Handle." 'Nuff said. As if that weren't enough, TriTeca editor Michelle Chihara threw a party in what is becoming the only hip neighborhood for miles around, during which wigs, polka music, and roller skates made an appearance. Janet frightened us (and herself) by test-driving a personality named Dolores while under the influence of one of the wigs, but at least the editors are getting their copy in to her on time now. (Don't ask.) Most of us showed up, despite the fact that icy road conditions contributed to some serious damage to several of our cars. What is it about cars and Tripod, huh? I'll bet you thought that we were going to have a new-employee-free Insider this time, didn't you? Well, guess again: This week we welcome editorial intern Alyssa Boehm, Software Engineer Oliver Maerz, and we're happy to report that Bruce finally got himself some human resources help in the form of part-timer Susan Roe, who will be concentrating on, yes, hiring even more new employees! That's all for now, folks. See you next week!
