Tripod Insider

Vol. 3, No. 17

April 25, 1997

Welcome to the Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. Another week, another party, and even more employees. Read all about it after the editors tell you what's new on the site.

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY

This week we look at the very nature of work itself -- is it a quasi-religious experience, a chance to join an ongoing revolution, or just a necessary evil? Tom Frank, editor of "The Baffler," a Chicago- based journal of cultural criticism, takes an insightful look at "The Resume as Religious Text" and dares to blaspheme against the deities of the business pantheon.

Next, Mr. Frank cuts through the "revolutionary workplace" rhetoric of magazines such as Wired and Fast Company -- replacing the hype with some cold, hard facts.

Candi Strecker, a columnist for the San Francisco Bay Guardian and editor of the '70s zine "It's a Wonderful Lifestyle!," kicks off a two-part series on "Career Contrarians" -- people who work just enough to make the monthly nut, preferring to pursue their passions instead.

This is the last week for Tripod members to contribute their experiences to our upcoming "Work Day" module. This week's survey covers lunch hour -- tell us how you spend YOUR daily break.

But wait -- there's more! Be sure to get more out of each work day by participating in our Work Smart conference.

POLITICS & COMMUNITY

This, the last week of our "Personal Media" month, is also the last week for Tripod's Politics & Community section. P&C;'s loyal readers and survey-posters have made this an extremely rewarding section to produce, but we've decided to focus our efforts on making the rest of Tripod even better. Don't worry, though: We will continue to cover the same sorts of political- and community-oriented topics in the other sections of Tripod. Thanks to everybody who's participated!

Take one more look at the following articles from "Personal Media" month: Billy "Upski" Wimsatt's interview with the founder of PHAT LIP! youth radio; my own analysis of what puts the zine in e-zine; Mike Agger's meditation on using the Net as a diary; and Laurie Ouellette's profile of Paper Tiger television.

New this week is radical historian Howard Zinn's inspiring meditation on "Battling the Bomb." Find out why people spill their blood on missiles and other mysteries of life.

After looking at Web rants gone wrong, Perspective takes a look at people whose online vents, rants and raves hit the mark.

Gif Girl takes you on a tour of her closet. This week, she discloses what's on her bookshelves. Design resources in print, in Eye Site.

Internet Service Providers have been using telephone lines, and now the telephone companies want a cut of ISP profit. The Lemming Report scopes out the ISP/telco battle.

Perfecting Personal Publishing, Part Two. Zine publisher Doug Lawson gets you started on your own venture, in Ware/Howz.

Internet Explorer 4.0 is out in Beta. What will it mean for your desktop? The Page Slave looks into it.

LIVING & TRAVEL

Get this: Book publishers are finally catching on to zines. Yes, it's true, zine creators from Lisa "Suckdog" Carver to Al "Girl Reporter" Hoff are being honored with book contracts, copy editors, and -- zine purists cover your ears -- money. Get the reviews, interviews, and predictions in Zines Go Mainstream.

In the survey, help out the book publishers who still think "zine" is kids' slang for magazine. Nominate the zine books you'd like to see.

Want more on zines? Stop by the Personal Media topic of the Media Savvy Conference. Discuss the gray area between media for passion and media for money, and what happens when a zine gets discovered by the mainstream.

And then there's Doctor Bob. He's not sure he'd know a zine if he saw one, but he can certainly tell you how to build strong bones, how to recognize chronic fatigue syndrome, and what to do about heel spurs.

Zines will continue on Tripod next week, with "Where the Girls Are" -- The Women's Room presents some of the finest ladies in the world of zines.

Tripod Insider

The Insider welcomes Mike Adams and Nadine Kessler to the Tripod team, in our Big Apple Annex. Mike used to be known here as "Mike the Temp," but now he's "Mike the Sales Assistant." (Looks better on the business card.) And Nadine comes to us from one of those big, fancy-clothes-wearin' corporations, where she may have hobnobbed with the suits on occasion, but she probably didn't get much chance to party with the guy who signs her checks. Now, it's like a rite of passage.

Nadine's first chance to throw a few back with C.E.Bo came last weekend, at a long-overdue Tripod company party. Even the New York folks showed up, though they had to plow through a couple hundred miles of snow to get here. (That's right, snow. In April.) A good time was had by all.

And in this week's sporting news, the Tripod soccer team kicked off its spring season with a satisfying 0-0 tie. The rain let up just in time for us to engage in what was, for most of us, our first moderately athletic activity since last fall (we'd count bowling, but that's a bit of a stretch). Yessir, our offense may be lacking, but how about that vise-like defense? World Cup, here we come!
