    Page Counters and Guestbooks

    This section offers help using counters, forms, guestbooks, and nice ways to personalize your Web pages.

    Q: How do I put a counter on my page?

    Tripod provides a simple guest counter for members to use. If you use the QuickPage builder, you can select "Add a Counter" for one of the sections on your page. If you are building custom pages, the code for the counter is as follows:

      <IMG SRC="/bin/counter/[page name]">

    Specify the filename of the page you want the counter to keep track of.

    This code will produce the actual number of hits. You should put your own text around the counter number. This will work for any page you have on Tripod.

    Q: Can I increase or reset the counter on my page?

    No, currently you cannot change (manually increase or reset) the number on your counter.

    Q: Can I change the color of the counter?

    You may change the color of your counter by adding an RGB hexadecimal color designation after specifying which page the counter is tracking. For example:

      <IMG SRC="/bin/counter/page?ff0000">

    This will produce a counter with red numbers. For more extensive information on color, please see the Toolbox section on Color.

    Q: What does it mean when the counter says "a lot of?"

    When the counter reads "a lot of," this simply means that the counter is very busy and cannot display the counter number. Please be patient and check back later.

    Q: How come I can't see my counter at all?

    The most common reason why this happens is that the counter is the same color as the background of the page. Unless otherwise specified, the counter is black, so the background of a page is also black, the counter cannot be seen. Please make sure that counter is a different color than the background color of the page.

    Q: If I use WebTV, why can't I see my counter?

    WebTV software does not support the particular Web server specification that Tripod and many other counters take advantage of. Other people visiting your page will be able to see the counter if they are not using WebTV.

    Q: How do I put forms on my page?

    Tripod provides a forms handler for members to use that will e-mail the results of a fill-in form to the owner of a page. For a tutorial on how to use that feature, please see the Create a Form page.

    Q: How can I put a guestbook on my page?

    Tripod provides Guestworld guestbooks free to all Tripod members building web pages — sign up for your guestbook right here.
