      Homepage Building Help

This section answers general questions about using Tripod to build and host your Web pages.

Q: How do I build my homepage on Tripod?

You can use Tripod's Homepage Studio to build a Web page, or you can build pages with other page building software (even a text editor) and upload them to Tripod. If you use Tripod's Homepage Studio, you can use the QuickPage builder, which helps you build a page and does not require any knowledge of HTML. The Custom editor allows you to directly create or edit a page. If you do not use the Tripod Homepage Studio, you will need to upload your finished pages to Tripod. For more information about tranferring files to Tripod, please see the help section on uploading.

Q: How much disk space do I get to build my page?

Tripod members are entitled to 11 megabytes of disk space. Those who purchase a Tripod Premium Membership have 22 megabytes.

Q: What is the difference between the QuickPage editor and the Freeform editor?

QuickPage lets you build a Web page without any knowledge of HTML, but also provides the flexibility to help you create a page that is both personal and attractive. QuickPage takes you through easy to follow, step-by-step process to build a page and writes the HTML for you.

The Freeform editor allows you to edit the file directly, giving you total control over the HTML of your page.

      Q: What is a QuickPage?

A QuickPage is a Web page that was built using Tripod's QuickPage editor. It contains special formatting information that a regular HTML file does not contain. Building a QuickPage is a very quick and easy way of creating Web pages. A QuickPage can only be edited with Tripod's QuickPage editor. QuickPages are easily be converted to regular HTML files using the convert command in the Filemanager. To convert your QuickPage into Freeform, choose the "edit with" option in Filemanager.

Q: Can I use page building programs such as PageMill or Hotdog to make my Tripod homepage?

Yes, you can create your own Web pages using any Web page editor. Once you create these pages, you must upload them to Tripod. Please use only numbers and letters (no spaces) when naming them and be sure to include the ".html" or ".htm" suffix to the filename. Please note that the default page for Tripod pages is an "index.html" (or "index.htm") file.

Q: Can I use Microsoft Frontpage?

Yes, you can use Microsoft FrontPage to upload your finished pages on to Tripod. As of now, we do not support versions of FrontPage earlier than FrontPage 98. Learn more about FrontPage enabling here.

Q: How do I update my page?

You can update your page by going to the Homepage Studio and clicking on Filemanager. You will be shown a list of the files you have built. Select the file you wish to modify and depending on the type of page, you will be taken the appropriate editor. QuickPages are edited with the QuickPage editor and other text/HTML files are edited with the Freeform editor.

If you built your page on your local machine, you can upload the new version to Tripod via FTP.

Q: How do I get my own pages onto Tripod?

To get your pages onto Tripod, you'll use an Internet communications protocol named FTP (file transfer protocol) to upload the files. Several programs are available to help you use FTP to upload; you can do it right from your browser if you use Netscape 2.0 or higher. There are all kinds of FTP programs: if you don't have Netscape 2.0, several graphical interface FTP programs and command-line interface FTP programs are available.

For specific instructions on how to upload your files with FTP, please see the section on Uploading Your Files.

Q: Can everyone look at my homepage?

Yes, your Tripod Homepage is viewable by anyone on the Web. Viewers do not need to be Tripod members.

Q: What is the address of my page?

      Your URL is:

      http://[your member name].tripod.com/

The default first page is an "index.html" file. Please note that Tripod member names are CASE sensitive, as is the address (URL) of your page.

Q: What is the default page? Why should I call a file "index.html"?

The default page on Tripod server is an "index.html" or "index.htm" file. In other words this is the page that the server assumes is the first page when a particular file is not specified. For example the following URL:

        http://[your member name].tripod.com/

        is the same as

        http://[your member name].tripod.com/index.html

Utilizing a default page allows you to have a shorter homepage URL and will prevent visitors from seeing the contents of your directory.

Q: Can I make more than one Web page?

Yes, you can build multiple pages easily with Tripod's Homepage Studio or upload additional files to your Tripod directory.

Make sure that you give each page a new name be aware that multiple pages will count against your disk quota.

Q: Why is there an advertisement on my page?

As advertising ensures our ability to continue to provide members with FREE cutting-edge homepage-building tools and unlimited space, we have modified our advertising policy. Much in the way that your television viewing is supported solely by advertising, so must we offset the costs of new and better services by serving ads for every pageview. The ads are placed by the server and do not count against your disk quota. If you would like to remove the ad from your page, you may purchase a Premium Membership and pay a fee to not have ads on your pages. If you're a Premier Builder and are taking part in Tripod's Builder Bucks program, this policy makes it easier to strike it rich! Every served ad is applied to your total, meaning you ultimately earn even more money!

Q: How do I keep track of how many people visit my page?

Tripod provides a general page counter for members to use on their Web pages. Please see the help section on Counters, Forms, and Guestbooks for more information. TripodStats, powered by NedStat, also tracks how many people visit your page.

Q: Does Tripod provide any type of log information about the traffic to my Web pages?

Yes! TripodStats enables you to keep track of how many people visit your page, how often and where they come from.

Q: Can I use forms on my Tripod homepage?

Yes, you can use forms on your pages. Tripod also provides a forms handler that will e-mail the results of a form to you. Please see the help section on Counters, Forms, and Guestbooks for more information.

Q: Can I restrict access to my homepage?

While you can't restrict homepage access, you can only make directories private (another excellent argument for organizing your files into directories). You may use Filemanager to manage your member directory and create an access list.

Q: How do I delete my homepage or other files in my Tripod directory?

You may delete any file in your Tripod directory from the Filemanager portion of Tripod's Homepage Studio. You can use this feature to delete any file in your Tripod directory, including images.

Q: Can I get my own domain name, like "www.myname.com"?

Tripod members can register their own domain names and redirect them to their Tripod URLs through NameSecure. All Tripod members already have their own personalized subdomain; for more information, click here.
