    GUESTWORLD Guestbook

This section helps you with your Guestworld guestbook.

Q: How do I get a Guestworld guestbook?

    Go to this URL: http://guestworld.tripod.com
Fill out the form and you will be given the HTML to copy and paste into your homepage. (Copy and Paste commands are usually located in the Edit pulldown menu.) If you forget or lose this HTML, just go to the TechCenter Utility Page, enter your guestbook name, and you'll be given it again.

Q: How do I find my guestbook?

If you know your guestbook name, enter it into the form on the TechCenter Utility Page and you will be given the correct URL for your guestbook. If you don't know the name of your guestbook then you should probably just re-register a different one and really remember it this time!

Q: Can the guestbook reside on my server?

Unfortunately, no. For now it must reside on our server where the guestbook program is.

Q: What is a guestbook name and how does it work?

Your guestbook name is a one word, ALPHANUMERIC name (i.e. only use letters and/or numbers when you choose a guestbook name) that we use to keep track of your guests in the database. (Be sure not to include any spaces or punctuation in your guestbook title.) It is also used in the URL to tell us what your guestbook name is.

Q: I recently put a guestbook on my page and people have signed it. I can view it from your site, but I can't view it from my page. The HTML appears to be correct.

Your HTML code for viewing the guestbook, though it appears correct, is actually wrong... there must be a typo in there somewhere! If it works from one page it should work from another page. Check your code carefully and you'll find the culprit!

Q: I'm already a Tripod member — can I use the same member name and password for my Guestworld guestbook?

Unfortunately you have to register separately for a Guestworld guestbook. If your Tripod member name isn't already taken by another Guestworld user, you can sign up with the same name. However, you may have to come up with a new member name. Be creative, and our sign-up process will help with alternative suggestions!

Q: I already have a Guestworld guestbook — can I use the same member name and password when I sign up for Tripod?

Only if it's not already taken by a Tripod member. If the name is taken, you'll have to come up with a new name. Sorry!

Q: I already have a Tripod guestbook — should I sign up for a Guestworld guestbook?

For the time being, both Tripod guestbooks and Guestworld guestbooks will continue to work. However, at some point we will start to phase out the Tripod guestbooks and only Guestworld guestbooks will be available. We think Guestworld does a great job with guestbooks — try it out and you'll see!

Q: Can I alter the design of my Guestworld guestbook?

Yes, you can customize the title, background, and the text and link colors. Go to the TechCenter, choose Utilities, then Guestbook Manager, and then Change Layout. This will bring up the following fields:
    Homepage
    Home title
    Keywords
    Category
    E-mail address
    Title
    Body tag
Text [Text entered here will appear near the top of the page, under a banner ad.]
Entry divider [The default is a HR tag but you include any kind of text or image here.]
You will need to enter an HTML tag in order to change the background, text, link, and visited link colors.

Q: Can I edit or delete messages left in my guestbook?

Yes, you can do both. Go to the TechCenter, choose Utilities and then Guestbook Editor. You'll be asked to enter your password, and from there you can delete or edit any of the entries in your guestbook.

Q: How many messages will my guestbook hold?

Your guestbook will hold 250 messages — after that, the oldest messages are deleted.

Q: Some messages disappeared from my guestbook!

This is probably because each guestbook holds a maximum of 250 messages — after that, the oldest messages are deleted.

Q: Can visitors edit their own messages?

Yes, right after a visitor leaves a message, he is given the option to approve the entry.

Q: Can I send e-mail to the people who left messages in my guestbook?

Yes, you can e-mail users individually very easily, using the e-mail link that is on every message. (All visitors to your guestbook have access to these e-mail addresses.) You can also send e-mail from the TechCenter, using either Guest E-mail or Reference E-mail. Guest E-mail gives a listing of the visitors and an e-mail link. Reference E-mail lets you send e-mail to visitors according to where they came from. If you pick "any" as your reference source, you will be able to bulk-mail all the people who have signed your guestbook. The message is sent from Guestworld but it will show your return e-mail address.

Q: Can users leave me private messages?

Yes. When someone signs the guestbook they get a check box option to send their note as a private message. When you visit your own guestbook, the entry appears as usual but it is marked: "Private — click to view." You will have to give your password when you click on this link, and then you will be able to read the message.

Q: Can I get some user statistics about my guestbook?

Yes, these stats can be accessed from the TechCenter. The stats show how people found your guestbook, e.g. Web search or word of mouth (derived from a pull-down menu visitors use). The stats will also tell you the total number of guests and when your guestbook was last signed. The pie charts will show you how the visitor found your guestbook, and the browser type they were using.

Q: What is a deluxe guestbook?

A deluxe guestbook allows you to use as many fields in your guestbook as you wish. Go to Guestbook Utilities in the TechCenter and choose Advanced to get a deluxe guestbook. The deluxe guestbook is meant for advanced users who are comfortable with HTML. Deluxe guestbooks are limited to 50 entries.

Q: Can my guestbook automatically e-mail anyone who leaves a message?

Yes, This is part of a new addition to our guestbook service called "Email Respond". You can choose to send a customised response to each person who has signed your guestbook and opt to have a special message sent to you whenever someone has left you a guest entry.
Select the "Email Response" option from the Guestbook utilities. You will be prompted for your password at this point. You will see two sets of boxes. The top box controls the email sent to a guest after signing your guestbook. The bottom box controls the email you will receive each time a guest signs your guestbook. Select the appropriate radio button for each option (send/don't send or receive/don't receive).
In the text boxes, you can also customize the messages that will be sent or received. When you are finished, press the Update Now button below. You can change/cancel these messages at any time by returning to this Automatic Email Response screen and modifying your options.

Q: Can I screen IP addresses with my guestbook?

Yes, If you are being plagued by anonymous individuals who spam your guestbook and leave obscene messages, you can keep them out forever with an IP screen. By looking in your "Edit/Delete Entries" screen (Utilities Page), you will be able to see the IP address of the persons who signed your guestbook. Once you have identified someone who you want to restrict from your guestbook, you can activate an IP screen to keep them from leaving messages.
At the IP Screening Utility, you can choose to turn your IP screen on or off. With the IP screen on, you can prevent persons originating from a particular web address from leaving messages in your guestbook.
To restrict access from a particular IP, enter it into the "Add New IP Address" box below and then press the Submit Changes button. You will see the IP address listed together with the number of times someone from that address has tried to sign your guestbook since you activated the screen.
You can use wildcards for the IP fields as well. If a unwanted guest is using a multi-IP Internet provider like AT&T;, you will probably have to block an entire class of addresses. For instance, you could block an IP class beginning with 206.12.12.xxx (where x is any number) by using 206.12.12.* as the IP address to block. Beware that this will block all legitimate guests from these IPs as well. If you would like to have the IP screen removed from a particular address, just click the delete filter button for that address and then press the Submit Changes button below.
